dilemma...confusion...more doubts...

an interesting beginning to a new week. monday morning...got woken up by a phonecall, asking me to go for a job interview. about 10 mins after that, there was another phonecall, also asking me to go for a job interview!

my first interview was at salient information, for the post of content writer. they're the company that manages www.myc.com.my and the MYC magazine. also does promotions and brand marketing for companies that want to target the 18-25 year audience. the content writer will be required to write the magazine's contents and post them online. that person has to travel quite frequently around klang valley to source for information, conduct interviews, be able to manage time and assignments well.

imagine...me having to interview people like teh tarik crew and nicholas teo (local artistes), ekin cheng (hong kong star), corporate people (bankers, lawyers), extreme sports athletes, etc etc!!?? it was a back to back interview...first with human resource/manager lady (whom i later found out to be boss' PA/PR & marketing executive), then the boss himself. think it went ok...obviously nothing confirmed yet. but the scary part of this job will be conducting intervews and handling the content writer post alone!!!

on to 2nd interview. it was at cosmotots. they're an educational consultant centre, providing english classes for 4-12 year olds. these little "terrors" are no joke...they read english classics like "king solomon's mines", "anne of green gables" and "don quixote", then move on to "east of eden" and "lord of the flies" (all unabridged)!! hello??? i haven't even touched any of these books, and already i feel intimidated! the interview was for the post of mentor, because they're opening 4 new branches and need new blood to help out.

the scary part was what the interviewer at cosmotots told me. he came from an advertising background, and told me some darn terrifying stuff. it seems that girls are at a disadvantage when it comes to being in advertising (especially those in account servicing). they have to take care of their dignity (jaga maruah) and know how far they're willing to go to succeed. some have been pressured to...er...sleep with the client, just to get the client and contract! big pressure from client and company, he said. also, in order to get clients, one needs to either enjoy playing golf or drink loads alcohol!

i'm like...shit...is this what advertising is like? am i even in the right line at all? will i ever have to face such a situation in the future? i can't even finish one glass of champagne and already i feel drunk! and i don't want to compromise my dignity!!! oh god...the dilemma and confusion! what kind of job should i even apply now? i can't do graphic designing coz i've got no talent...i'm now afraid of doing account servicing...that leaves me with almost zero options! shit...shit...shit!!! arrrggghhh!!!

anyways, i kinda rejected the job offer. told the interviewer to hire a better candidate (even though he did seem keen on calling me back for a 2nd interview), since they're looking for someone long-term. long term meaning 5-10 years! i can't promise that i'll even stay that long. even the expected pay i stated, rm1600, is too high!

left the 2nd interview almost in tears and very much doubting myself. sigh...i hope i'll still find the courage to continue applying for more jobs, surviving interviews and getting my first job.

i believe not all will have to go that extent lor. though, perhaps most ppl in that particular line will have to go through it. worry not! i'm sure things will turn out right for you. "it's always darkness before light"... =)
